The Faery and the Cat
Folks,
I have a faery story that involves one of my cats, Kristabel, who is 95% blind. In the 5% she can see, it's only light and shadow with no distinct shapes or details. How she and her brother, Zachariah, came to live with me is a story in itself. But for now ...
Ever since Kristabel was a little kitten, I've noticed that she would sometimes fix on something above her, and then follow it as if she could see something moving. But I couldn't see anything there, so this was a mystery as to what she was reacting to. One day, when she was older, I came upon her as she was 'tracking' this invisible thing with the movement of her head. As I usually do, when I catch her at it, I comment something like "Are you playing with your faerie friends?". The comment seemed to fit.
This time I lay down beside the cat so that I could get her perspective, and try and see what it was that had her attention. What was causing her to behave like a cat with vision? Much to my amazement, I saw a transparent little winged person dressed in white and flitting over her head! It was there, and then just as suddenly winked out and was no longer visible. As soon as this happened, the cat lost interest. Clearly, my cat had reacted to its exit. Since then, I've caught glimpses of this faery as a small white winged streak zipping around my house. My other cat who can see just fine, Zachariah, has seen it as well as we both reacted at the same time to its sudden appearance before us.
But there is more to the story that takes it deeper into a mystery, and the mysery involves a series of dreams I've had since childhood. When I was a little girl I dreamed about a group of nature elementals that I seemed to be familiar with, in the dream. Where this imput came from I cannot say. At my little girl age I had never seen anything like it in a movie, tv, book, song, or story time. One of them was a Faery Queen named Kristabel, and she and her faery friends - in the dreams - could come and go through vortex doorways that lead from my house to other places.
When I knew I was going to adopt 2 kittens, I searched for their names first so that I would know them by their names. That may seem a strange way to go about it, but I was compelled to choose the kittens that matched the names I would come up with. Shortly before the adoption day came, I dreamed about the 2 names: Kristabel, for the Faery Queen in my childhood dreams; and Zachariah, for an astonishing encounter I once had with a real angel by that name (posted on ID years ago).
So imagine my shock when I saw that transparent faery flitting above Kristabel! Now I wonder more about that childhood dream than I ever did, and why the name came to me again in a dream. Where I once thought the faery dreams to be a whimsically sweet childhood dream fantasy, it now seems there is more to it than I know. Could there really be a faery named Kristabel, and was this faery the one I saw flitting above the cat? This is just one more paranormal mystery from my life that I'd like to solve <g>. Has anyone ever heard of Kristabel the Faery Queen, possibly in folklore? At 11:56 AM 5/5/02 +0000, Starfire Tor wrote:
My cats have been acting very upset since yesterday. Zachariah has been running all over the house, stopping every few minutes to meow at me and make meaningful contact reminiscent of a "Lassie" movie, where the collie dog is telling a human that someone needs help. Kristabel, my blind cat, suddenly started meowing and meowing and wouldn't stop until I picked her up and gave her lots of reassurances. This isn't like her at all. She's blind, but that doesn't stop her from getting around the house just fine. Then she also started with the "follow me" routine, ala "Lassie". This is interesting since she couldn't see her brother to mimic him, so she was responding to whatever he was responding to, and that has me a little spooked. I checked them both out and neither one are sick, although today is their birthday - but I don't think cats get birthday angst <g>.We've had lots of moderate quakes, like those current swarms, and the cats don't act this way. So I'm a little concerned over what IS making them act this way. Is there a bigger quake coming? Or is it something else psychic they picked up? Three days ago was the anniversary of the death of my beloved 19 year old cat (my 18 year old died 6 months before), who died months after the big quake here in 1994. I got Zachariah and Kristabel years after my two older cats died, so they never met. But I have a photo of the kittens, and in it is a phantom picture of my late cat playing with them. So I wonder if what my current cats are reacting to is the spirit of my late cat. I haven't seen his ghost in years, but the cats might see what I don't. It's all very spooky here, wondering what I'm dealing with.

Folks,
Thanks to everyone who offered an opinion, on and off list, on the spooky stuff going on with my cats. Please consider this a reply to all who responded.
The strange cat behavior seems to be over, but not before some very intriguing things happened. I still can't say what - or who - they were reacting to, but every time they got animated and vocal and wanted me to follow them, I did. Each time they would lead me through the house to my living room, in an area where I've had some boxes of items sitting. I had purchased these items many months before, but hadn't gotten around to doing anything more than park them on the floor. Kristabel and Zachariah have never seen the contents, nor are the contents intended for them.
But after being led to these boxes several times, I decided to take the items out and display them. The items are 3 chimes of different sizes: small - winged horse; medium - faery; large - knight. These three items represent artistic themes already in my home (winged horse, faery, knight), so the items themselves didn't represent a new element.
However, as I thought about it, maybe it was the 'chime' element combined that was the visual theme that was the message. So - outside of the cats hearing or sight - I hung the chimes inside my house, away from where kitty paws or breezes could reach them, and waited to see how the cats would react. I made sure not to bring any special attention to the chimes, and that they were silent. In only a few minutes, both cats had positioned themselves right under where the chimes were hanging and seemed very content.
As it happens, the room where I hung the chimes also contains shelves with many Science Fiction and Fantasy toys and collectibles. Because I live in quake country, every single one of these items is held in place with a special quake clay. Even a big quake can't shake them off the shelves. But as I stood there looking at the cats lounging beneath the silent chimes, one of the collectibles lifted off of the shelf (and I mean LIFTED!), arced through the air, and landed where the cats were. The collectible was a little action figure of the TV Hercules character. BTW, I've seen this sort of poltergeist thing happen in my house before, but the timing of this one seemed to be connected to the whole cat behavior/chime thing.
The cats didn't seem to mind getting a visit from Hercules <g>, and in fact took the whole thing in stride. Their spooky behavior was never something where they showed fear, because they did not, but was more their behavior that made it seem like they could see and hear things that I couldn't, and were responding to them - and then trying to get me to respond. I thought it might mean a big quake was coming, but so far all of the quake activity is mild - so far.
Then the next intriguing thing happened, which only happened as I was following up on the flying Hercules action figure. I got a ladder and a flashlight and went to look on the shelf where Hercules had been standing, with many other action figures. I wanted to inspect the shelf and quake hold conditions. Everything was in order, with no physical reason why the figure lifted off - leaving the strong quake clay on the shelf. This confirmed what my eyes had seen - the figure came off the shell because of a reason other than normal.
While I was up there, I used the flashlight beam as a straight line to plot the trajectory of the flying Hercules, which confirmed that it had defied the laws of gravity when it lifted and arced. Kristabel, my blind cat, was still below me and interested in the sounds I was making. As she was 'looking up' at me is when it happened - the flashlight beam went into her eyes. The moment it did she started to meow, just like she had been the past few days, along with the beginnings of the strange behavior I wrote about previously. I quickly removed the beam from her eyes, and she stopped meowing. I repeated this more than 20 times, and each time the light beam was directly in her eyes she would meow (rather excitedly) and get very animated and want me to interact with her in a way I've never seen her do before.
As this spontaneous experiment continued, it suddenly dawned on me that I now had the answer to a big riddle concerning Kristabel. With the light beam in her blind eyes, she was going into the behavior where she makes it look like she's following something (with her eyes) directly above her. These are the times when I'd playfully say something like "Are you playing with your little faery friends?". Now I'm realizing that she was seeing something all those times, and what she was perceiving had to be an ethereal light that only she could see! Think about that. My 95% blind cat is able to see a source of light not visible to me! This must be the energy, or interdimensional people, or faeries, or angels, or vortexes, or SOMETHING that's in my house! That 'something' isn't a bad 'something', as the cats accept it as being very friendly, and that 'something' is perceived as light. There you have it. This is where I am with all of this.

Poltergeist things are still happening, to further this thread of spookiness. Last I left off, just before the AT Mission launch, my Hercules action figure took flight on a trajectory that defied gravity.
The day after the Hercules action figure went flying, a Thor action figure did the same thing. Thor/Tor - I guess there's a message there. Then the day after that it was a small teddy bear wearing a sweater with a red love heart symbol on it. Hmmmm ... do I have an invisible love struck spirit <GGG>?
The last that's been happening has to do with the Thor action figure. It has now gone flying 4 times. This last time was a little different because it lifted off the shelf just as I was climbing a ladder to look on the higher shelves. Just as I reached that shelf level, Thor lifted off, hit my chest, and then vanished completely. I spent 30 minutes searching places it couldn't possibly be - and then it reappeared on a different shelf where it doesn't belong. In fact, it was a comical visual. The Thor action figure, with its arm raised with magick hammer held high, was straddling a model of a helicopter. It looked like Thor was riding the helicopter!
The shelve where Thor went visiting is my aviation area, where I have models of those flying craft that I've OBE seen in future event disasters.
The cats haven't had any unusual behavior since the first few days of this ... and yet the flying figures continue.
