THE STORY OF MISS PENNY HEN AND DR. QUINSY QUACK

Miss Penny Hen lived in a little red house with flowers and a garden all about. A babbling brook gurgled down into a pond at the corner of the yard. Every day Miss Hen would go out in the garden and scratch to get all the bugs and weeds with a shout. To all her plants, she'd cluck and croon. Her flowers and vegetables were the biggest for blocks around.

One day Mrs. Rabbit came by and found Miss Hen very ill. Immediately, she hopped to the top of the hill.

"Dr. Quack, Dr. Quack, come quick! Miss Penny Hen is awfully sick!"

Dr. Quinsy Quack flew around to find his satchel.

"Where, oh, where did I put that thing? Usually I leave it on the stand beside the door." Finally he found it under the table on the kitchen floor.

"Excuse me, while I check to make sure I have everything." Dr. Quack found in his grip, a needle and thread to use in case his trousers ripped. A thermometer for taking temperatures. The lollipop stick he used for peering down throats attonsils. Many bottles of herbs and potions. Whiskey, abullet, and a rolling pin for emergency operations. Tweezers and scalpel for hard to get slivers. And there was his stethoscope for listening to the innards grumble.

Straightening his glasses, and ruffling his feathers, he said, "All present and accounted for, Mrs. Rabbit, lead the way. I'll fix up Miss Hen this very day!" Thenhanginghissatchel from his bill, heflew while Mrs. Rabbit hopped down the hill. Soon they were at Miss Hen's house.

"Please, boil some water, Mrs. Rabbit." He said it without thinking; out of habit. Then Dr. Quack went right to Miss Hen. In his bedside manor he comforted her.

"Don't worry, my dear, we'll have you well again."

She managed a smile and heaved a sigh. "Thank you, Doctor," was her weak reply.

Hetook her temperature to be sure, but, Dr. Quack hada hunch he knew the cure. With an "Oooo" and an "Ah-h"hetook from his bag enough herbs and potions to make a horse gag.

"Well, from combination "L" we'll make a tea. Take these pills, six of "O" and two of "V". And be sure not to forget your Vitamin "E". Take care of yourself, rest and be still. Now, if that don't fix you up, nothing will. So, don't you fret and don't you frown, for tomorrow I'll be back down."

The next day when Dr. Quinsy Quack came, Miss Hen was feeling about the same, so, he stayed and talked awhile. Soon his patient had sparkling eyes and a great big smile. When he took her pulse, it was racing fast. He said, "Rest assured the crisis is past."

Dr. Quack came to visit Miss Hen every day. Soon she was feeling as frisky as a kitten in May. Still, he stopped to see her on his way, up or down the hill.

It became apparent that he was courting her when on day he gave her a coat of fur.

"It was left to me by my great-aunt, Corrine. At first I didn't know what to do with the thing. Then I thought of you, my dear. I hope you like it." And he was sincere.

Miss Hen was flattered and overjoyed to have a coat so fine. After that, every other night, she asked him to come and dine.

To make a long story short, Dr. Quack wooed Miss Hen and kissed her with a juicy-oosey-smack! It wasn't long until the two were wed. The chapel hadn't seen a finer wedding itwas said. Pastor Quail married the happy pair. And shouts of joy filled the air along with confetti and rice. Of that great big wedding cake, everyone had a slice. Roxanne Wren was maid-of-honor and Christopher Crow was the best-man. After the reception and dance thehappy couple left hand in hand, to live happily-ever-after in Honey-moon-land.
